According to the tradition, the monastery was founded by monks of Mount Athos in the 15th century. It is said that the monks escaped from the Turks and found shelter here. The monastery had a large number of monks in the 17th century, had progressed a lot and possessed great spiritual radiation. It was the center of the monasteries of the Aegean, where the Commissioner of the Holy Monasteries also lived.
The monastery was destroyed by Omer Bey, the pasha of Karystos during the years 1821-1823. However, it was repaired in 1847 by the donations of the local people. During the German occupation, the monastery was a refuge and a place for the patriot to escape. From 1976 and since then, the monastery has been functioning as a convent.
