SAINT GEORGE’S CASTLE

Distance: 5.2 km

The Byzantine castle of Saint George (Agios Georgios) ,probably built in the 11th century in an area of less than one acre, is steep, offering an ideal natural fortification. The walls that survive until today reach up to 4 meters while the view from the castle causes awe to the visitor. Due to its prominent position, the castle was also used to transmit signals with fires to Skyros, Sporades, Mount Athos, but also to Avlonari, at the interior of Evia. In the courtyard of the castle there was the chapel of Saint George, which gave its name to the castle.
